North Anna Nuclear Reactor Shut Down for Refueling

September 13, 2010

Dominion Virginia Power has shut down one of its two nuclear reactors at the North Anna power station for scheduled refueling.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission figures show the Richmond-based utility began powering down Unit 1 late last week. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that it was completely idle Monday.

Refueling is typically conducted at 18-month intervals, and generally takes about four weeks or less.

The NRC figures show Unit 2 at North Anna, about 45 miles northwest of Richmond, remained operating at 100 percent capacity.
