Va. Police Academy Finances Investigated

September 16, 2010

An investigation of the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Academy's bookkeeping is under way after financial concerns prompted the cancellation of some courses.

Academy board Chairman Glenn Aylor told The News Virginian that the internal investigation will examine financial internal controls and the accounting process.

Aylor said the board determined accounting principles were "not acceptable."

He declined to provide details about the financial concerns.

The investigation began Aug. 27, following the resignation of former Executive Director Mitch Banta and the suspension of Assistant Director Mary Garber. Aylor, who is serving as the academy's interim director, would not say whether the investigation was related to the administrative changes.

Banta said Wednesday that the state cut about $100,000 from the academy's budget in 2009.

"As far as leadership there, I'd done as much as I could," Banta said. "They're looking for somebody now who's going to have a business management background."

The academy in Weyers Cave provides training to 59 law enforcement agencies, including emergency communication, jail operations and investigation techniques.

Aylor said basic entry-level and specialized in-service courses will continue, although the specialized training schedule may be limited. He did not say which courses were canceled.
