A Clifton Forge police officer convicting of neglecting his dog must perform 24 hours of community service and is forbidden to own animals.
Botetourt County Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jill Deegan told "The Roanoke Times" that Chris W. Broughman also must pay a $100 fine.
Broughman was convicted last week of animal neglect.
Deegan says county animal control officers responding to neighbors' calls went to Broughman's house in February. They found a Doberman pinscher chained so tightly that the dog's neck had grown around a metal collar.
Clifton Forge Police Chief Barry Balser says Broughman remains employed at the police department.
