Third Inmate Dies at Richmond Jail Since June

September 20, 2010

Another Richmond city jail inmate has died, the third since June.

Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr. said an inmate collapsed Friday at 1:30 p.m. and was later pronounced dead at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. No foul play is suspected; an autopsy is scheduled next week.

The inmate, whose identity wasn't immediately released, was taken to the hospital 19 minutes after the collapse and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:45 p.m., the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Two other inmates died earlier this summer, one from natural causes linked to a heart condition and the other from heat exposure.

Woody didn't release information about whether the most recent deceased inmate was housed in an area of the jail without air conditioning.
