Va. Man Kills Wife, Self After Domestic Argument

September 20, 2010

Prince William County police say a man shot and killed his wife in the middle of the road before shooting himself.

Police say the preliminary investigation shows that 42-year-old Robert Bates of Nokesville and his wife, 38-year-old Jennifer Bates, were in the 15700 block of Widewater Drive in Montclair about 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officials say the couple was arguing when Robert Bates pulled out a handgun and shot his wife in the upper body. They say he then shot himself in the head.

Officers found Bates dead at the scene; his wife died at a hospital.

Police say the husband previously had been arrested for domestic assault and battery after police were called to their home on June 26. A protective order barring contact between them had expired before Saturday's shooting.
