Va. Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense has announced the deaths of two soldiers, one of whom was from Virginia, in Afghanistan.

Twenty-seven-year-old Staff Sgt. Jamie C. Newman of Richmond, Virginia died September 17 and 26-year-old 1st Lt. Eric Yates of Rineyville, Kentucky dies September 18.

Officials say the soldiers died of wounds suffered when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in the Shari district of the Kandahar Province.

They were assigned to the1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Fort Campbell spokesman Rick Rzepka told the "Richmond Times-Dispatch" that Newman was an infantry squad leader.

Newman joined the Army in July 2003. He is survived by a son, a daughter and his parents.
