Operation Smile plans to start construction on a new $20 million headquarters building in Virginia Beach.
The international medical charity currently is based in Norfolk but plans to break ground next Thursday on nine acres next to Tidewater Community College. About 95 people will work at the new center, which Operation Smile expects to be completed by early 2012.
Operation Smile performs lifesaving surgeries for children who suffer from facial deformities such as cleft lips and palates.
Virginia Beach officials said in a release that the city donated the land and will contribute $1.4 million in infrastructure-related costs.
