UPDATE: Police Identify VT Student who Died from Fall

Blacksburg Police have identified the 19-year-old Virginia Tech student was found dead after falling from a third story apartment balcony Saturday night.

According to WDBJ-CBS7, police have identified the person involved in the fatal fall as David Campbell Gayle, of Norfolk.

The Roanoke Times reports Gayle was found behind a building in the 1700 block of Whipple Drive shortly after 11pm Saturday. Michael Smith, student who was visiting a friend at the same apartment complex, said witnesses told rescue crew members that the victim was trying to climb onto the roof.

Gayle was pronounced dead at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Police say the balcony did not collapse and no defects were visibly present. The incident remains under investigation.
