Tyson Foods Lays Off Virginia Employees

September 29, 2010

Two dozen workers have been laid off at the Tyson Food poultry processing plant in Harrisonburg, which is about 5 percent of its workforce.

Gary Mickelson, a Tyson spokesperson, says the layoffs affected workers who collected chickens from area farms.

Mickelson says company decided to hire a outside contractor to do the work.

Workers were notified September 1 and last Friday was the last days for the employees. Most were offered postions with the contractor or within the company.

The Harrisonburg plant employes about 500 people.
