State police say 10 people died in nine crashes on Virginia roadways over the July 4th holiday weekend.
That's down from 14 fatalities a year ago. But state police cautioned that despite the decrease, traffic deaths are on the rise this year.
Two teens were killed in a crash in Wise County over the holiday weekend. Two other fatal crashes involved motorcyclists in Franklin and Halifax counties. A pedestrian also was killed in Norfolk.
The remaining five crashes took place in Brunswick, Henrico, Madison, Rockingham and Southampton counties. Alcohol was a factor in at least one of the traffic fatalities and undetermined in two others.
All of the victims were drivers. Of the six crashes involving vehicles, five of the victims were not wearing seat belts.
