1 Dead After Accident at Virginia-owned Mine

October 12, 2010

A West Virginia man has died following an accident at a mine in Fayette County.

Alpha Natural Resources says 56-year-old William Dooley of Oak Hill died after suffering injuries at the Kingston Mining Inc. No. 1 coal mine on Monday.

Officials say Dooley had finished bolting a section of the mine roof when a piece of rock fell without warning. The Abingdon, Va., company said Dooley was evacuated from the mine and transported to Raleigh General Hospital.

The section of the mine where the accident occurred has been closed and state and federal mine investigators have been dispatched to the mine. The mine had not experienced a fatality in its 15-year history.

Alpha Natural Resources acquired Kingston Mining as part of its merger with Foundation Coal in 2009.
