Police are investigating a possible shootout near Virginia State University that left one dead and one wounded.
University spokesman Thomas Reed says an 18-year-old VSU student was shot in the ankle Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot next to campus. The student, who VSU didn't identify, was treated at a nearby hospital.
Chesterfield County police tell media outlets that 20-year-old Tyrail Hughes, of Petersburg, died of his wounds at a local hospital. Another person was driving Hughes to the hospital when the vehicle was involved in a crash in Petersburg.
VSU sent out school-wide alerts about the shooting but didn't lock down the campus.
