RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - He'd never admit it publicly, but the Republican defeats on Tuesday weren't all bad for Virginia's crusading conservative attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli, as he cranks the engine of his gubernatorial campaign.
All crusaders need a villain to challenge. For Cuccinelli and the conservatives who will decide the Republican gubernatorial nomination, President Barack Obama is the villain of choice.
There was no silver lining for Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Cuccinelli's rival for the GOP nomination. Gone now is the prospect that he might ascend to the governor's office with Gov. Bob McDonnell's departure for a plum job in a Mitt Romney administration.
The toughest loss was to George Allen, the governor who triggered a Republican renaissance 19 years ago yet couldn't win back the Senate seat he lost in 2006.
