$3.2M Va. Tech Grant Aimed at Smoking Cessation

July 27, 2013

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Tech addiction expert has received a $3.2 million grant to help people quit smoking.

The Roanoke Times (9http://bit.ly/1aOZysJ) reports that the grant to psychology professor Warren Bickel is one of the largest in the history of Tech's Carilion Research Institute in Roanoke.

The grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse will support Bickel's work over the next five years.

The research will require the recruitment of hundreds of smokers.

The study will try to answer the question: why does the brain of a smoker ignore the long-term benefits of not smoking for the instant gratification of having a smoke?

Bickel believes that the most addicted smokers are likely to downplay the dangers of smoking.
