Traffic is moving again on a stretch of Interstate 77 in southwest Virginia after multiple crashes involving 75 vehicles closed the southbound lanes for about nine hours.
State police say two people were killed and 16 others were injured. Thirty-six vehicles involved in Tuesday's wrecks were commercial vehicles.
The southbound lanes were closed from Wytheville to the North Carolina border after several crashes beginning at 11:39 a.m. A crash in the northbound lane involving at least two tractor-trailers just before 5 p.m. shut down traffic in that direction.
All lanes were reopened as of 9:45 p.m.
State police say heavy fog in the Fancy Gap area reduced visibility to zero.
