Eric Borenstein has been hired as executive director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
The 57-year-old Borenstein replaces Carla Johnson, who resigned in September. Borenstein will take over the position in July.
Borenstein has served as executive director of the Erie Philharmonic in Erie, Pa., since 2001.
The Virginia Symphony Orchestra has struggled financially in recent years. A $500,000 loan from the Norfolk Economic Development Authority in December 2008 helped the orchestra to avoid bankruptcy.
Symphony board chairman Blair Wimbush says $100,000 of the loan has been repaid.
