March 29, 2010

Authorities in Newport News are searching for a jail inmate who was mistakenly released.

The sheriff's office says Reginald B. Hurt walked out of the jail Friday night. He was being held on a charge of possession with intent to distribute drugs.

According to the sheriff's department, a deputy went to a holding cell to get three men who were to be released. The deputy called out the men's names and three people responded.

One of the inmates who was released from the cell signed for belongings that weren't his then gave another inmate's birthday, address and partial Social Security number to a magistrate.

When Hurt left without talking with a bail bondsman, deputies thought something was wrong. A deputy chased Hurt, but lost sight of him.
