Va. Inmate Released by Mistake Turns Self In

March 30, 2010

An inmate who was mistakenly released from the Newport News City Jail is back behind bars.

A Newport News Sheriff's Office spokeswoman says 32-year-old Reginald B. Hurt turned himself in to police Monday afternoon.

The sheriff's office says Hurt walked out of the jail Friday night. A deputy went to a holding cell to get three men who were to be released and called out their names. Hurt responded to one of the names, signed for the other inmate's belongings and was released.

Hurt was being held on a charge of possession with intent to distribute drugs. He now faces additional charges of escape, forgery and false pretense.

He declined a request for an interview.
