The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says it knows who the suspect is, but deputies have not caught him yet.
Deputies say they are looking for 52-year-old Douglas Eugene Barnes of Waynesboro because they believe he is the man who held up Scotto's Italian Pizzeria and Restaurant in Waynesboro Sunday.
The sheriff's office is working with the Waynesboro Police Department, which has obtained several felony warrants for Barnes' arrest. Officials say they put Barnes under surveillance Tuesday night, but that he realized he was being watched.
So, when a SWAT team went in to arrest him, officials say Barnes escaped. A helicopter and K-9 units were brought in to search for him, but that search was called off around 1 a.m.
Officials returned to the scene Wednesday morning to continue the search. Because Barnes has not been located and deputies believe he is still nearby, public schools in the Stuarts Draft area are on a modified lockdown.
Officials say they collected DNA evidence from a house on Stuarts Draft Highway Wednesday morning.
They say Barnes will face charges of armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony theft of a firearm and discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling when he is arrested.
Waynesboro police say all of the charges stem from incidents they believe occurred March 28, but they say the last two come from an incident in a dwelling on Park Road.
Anyone with information about Barnes' whereabouts is asked to call the Waynesboro Police Department at 540-942-6675 or Crime Stoppers at 800-322-2017.
