Live Pre-WWI Ordnance Unearthed at Va. Fort

April 2, 2010

Pre-World War I ordnance has been unearthed at Fort Eustis and explosives disposal teams plan to move and detonate the live round on the Newport News base.

Workers at a construction site uncovered the ten-inch Navy ordnance around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Buildings within hundreds of feet of the ordnance were evacuated as a precaution while the military disposal teams determined if the explosive round was stable enough to move.

They concluded it was and plan to move the round to the backside of the post, bury it and detonate the ordnance.

The military asked post residents along the round's route to remain indoors.
