April 6, 2010

Prince William County police say a 43-year-old man is in custody after crashing his sports utility vehicle into a police car and seriously injuring an officer.

Police say John Cook of Ruther Glen ran through a red traffic signal on Prince William Parkway Saturday night and struck a police car, which then hit a utility pole. A 43-year-old Fairfax County police officer driving the car was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Cook was arrested after being treated at a hospital. He faces several charges, including driving under the influence and marijuana possession. A 23-year-old woman in his SUV also was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

A court hearing for Cook is set for June 2.
