New Va. Railway Express Operator to Hire Employees

April 13, 2010

A company that won the contract to run Virginia Railway Express plans to recruit the commuter rail's existing conductors and train engineers.

Keolis Rail Services America says its representatives will speak with Amtrak employees to join Keolis when it takes over operations from Amtrak on June 28. Amtrak has operated VRE trains since the system started in 1992, but lost the contract last fall.

VRE spokesman Mark Roeber says Keolis recently won approval from the workers' unions to speak with employees.

He says VRE and Keolis hope to determine by the end of April which Amtrak employees will join Keolis, and which will stay with Amtrak. Keolis needs to hire about 80 train conductors and engineers.
