Crews Search Va. River for 5-year-old After Boat Flips

April 13, 2010

Crews are searching the Dan River for a 5-year-old boy who was in a boat that capsized near a dam in Danville.

Danville Police Capt. Matt Carter says Kolton Brim Karnes of Sutherlin was wearing a life jacket but the current tore it off.

Karnes and his father were in the boat when it capsized Monday afternoon behind the Brantley Steam Station. The father was able to get out of the water after he tried to rescue the boy.

A rescue boat also capsized Monday in the current near the dam. Two rescuers were taken to Danville Regional Medical Center and released.

The search resumed Tuesday morning.
