President Barack Obama has nominated a Richmond lawyer for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Obama on Wednesday tapped John A. Gibney, who has more than 30 years of legal experience. Gibney had the backing of Virginia's two U.S. senators, Jim Webb and Mark Warner.

Gibney is a partner in the law firm Thompson-McMullan. The College of William and Mary graduate received his law degree in 1976 from the University of Virginia Law School.

He began his legal career as a clerk for Justice Harry L. Carrico of the Virginia Supreme Court.
