4-year-old Virginia Boy Killed by Train

April 16, 2010

Authorities are investigating the death of a 4-year-old Smyth County boy who was hit by a train.

Smyth County Sheriff David Bradley says investigators believe James Lee Hardy was playing near railroad tracks when he was struck by the step on the side of the train's engine.

Bradley says investigators plan to examine video from a camera on the Norfolk Southern Corp. train to determine what happened. The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. Thursday near a mobile home park in Atkins.

Bradley says the boy died at the scene.
