Gov. Bob McDonnell is honoring Virginia volunteers with the annual Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Awards.

McDonnell recognized the winners of the 2010 awards during a recent ceremony. The awards are given to individuals, families, groups and businesses that seek to enhance the lives of others in their communities.

The awards have recognized exceptional volunteer service in Virginia for more than 18 years.

McDonnell also designated next week as Virginia Volunteer Week to coincide with the National Volunteer Week. The governor's office says at least 1.7 million Virginians volunteer their time and talents annually and average nearly 243 million volunteer hours.
