Va. Town Sees Acting Police Chief Arrested

April 27, 2010

Brookneal's acting police chief has been arrested on a grand larceny charge.

Virginia state police said in a news release that Monday's arrest of Brian Lee Carr stemmed from an investigation that began last fall. Carr is free on bond but is on administrative leave from his job.

The 35-year-old Carr became acting chief when police chief Ricky Cousins resigned Jan. 20, the same day Cousins was charged with petit larceny stemming from a shoplifting incident in Lynchburg.

Carr's arrest leaves Brookneal with one law enforcement officer. But Mayor Phyllis Campbell said Campbell County's sheriff's department has been assisting the town. She says Town Council and the town attorney would meet soon to determine a course of action.
