Va. Mom on Trial for Abuse in Baby's Heroin Overdose

April 28, 2010

A Springfield mother charged with child abuse and neglect in the heroin overdose of her 5-month-old baby took the stand in her own defense.

Prosecutors in Fairfax County allege that 36-year-old Marilyn R. Fischl supplied heroin back in July to two roommates who were babysitting Fischl's children.

The babysitters snorted lines of heroin and one of them testified Tuesday that the baby got a hold of the paper used to wrap the heroin and started chewing on it.

Soon after the baby boy started to suck continually even though nothing was in his mouth and his eyes rolled to the back of his head. Doctors said the boy - who recovered - suffered an overdose.

Fischl denied that she supplied the two adult babysitters with heroin that day.
