Va. Reinstates Prayer Policy for Police Chaplains

April 29, 2010

Virginia State Police chaplains can invoke Jesus during prayers again.

State Police Superintendent Stephen Flaherty reinstated a policy allowing chaplains to use the name Jesus on Wednesday. Flaherty rescinded that policy after a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling two years ago. The court said prayers delivered on behalf of governments can't favor one religion over another.

Religious groups had asked Gov. Bob McDonnell to reinstate the policy and the governor says chaplains should be allowed to pray according to their consciences.
