More Virginans are participating in the 2010 Census than in the population count taken a decade ago.
As of Thursday morning, U.S. Census Bureau figures show 76 percent of households in Virginia have mailed back census forms, compared to 73 percent in 2000.
The national participation rate is 72 percent.
Census officials say workers will start going door-to-door Saturday to contact residents who didn't return the forms.
In Richmond alone, more than 700 census workers will visit households. Richmond census office manager George Jamerson says Richmond has more hard-to-count areas than other areas of the state.
