Va. Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man After Chase

April 30, 2010

A Martinsville official says a city police officer fatally shot a man who threatened another officer with a knife following a chase.

City Manager Clarence Monday says the chase began Thursday after the man pulled a knife and threatened a clerk at a Martinsville supermarket. He identified the suspect as 61-year-old Donald Barry Minter of Martinsville.

Monday says police shot the suspect with two high-voltage darts but he fled in a car. He says Minter led police on a 2-mile chase that ended in Henry County when he wrecked his vehicle.

Minter tried to flee on foot and ignored two more high-voltage
darts. An officer shot the suspect as he threatened another officer
with the knife.

Monday says Minter was pronounced dead at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
