Gunman Wounds Woman, Kills Self at Va. Walmart

May 3, 2010

Police in southwest Virginia say a gunman opened fire inside a Walmart store, wounding an employee before fatally shooting himself.

Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said Sunday that officers responded to a call of shots being fired inside the store at 9:54 p.m. Saturday.

Clark says the gunman, 64-year-old A.G. Anderson of Galax, was pronounced dead at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Clark says a 57-year-old store employee, Rita Carico of Galax, had gunshot wounds to the chest and head and was eventually flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in serious condition. A hospital spokesman declined to release information on her condition Sunday night.

Clark declined comment on a possible motive for the shooting and says the investigation is continuing.
