McDonnell Still Committed to Offshore Drilling

May 6, 2010

Gov. Bob McDonnell remains committed to making Virginia the first East Coast state to explore offshore oil and gas resources.

McDonnell stresses that he wants answers from the industry on the deadly oil spill before Atlantic waters are explored. But he said the government should move forward with its scheduled lease sale in 2012 while the mess is sorted out in the Gulf of Mexico.

In an interview with The Associated Press, McDonnell said being the first East Coast state to explore oil and gas will give Virginia a big economic boost.

The Republican governor has pushed hard to put Virginia at the head of the line for oil and gas exploration. Political support has waned following the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico.
