An effort to transform U.S. 1 from a rundown highway into a 2,400-mile tourist attraction is now under way in Virginia.
The General Assembly this spring named the route a historichighway. The designation was marked Tuesday in Chesterfield County, as well as the launch of a related website and improvements to Jefferson Davis Highway.
The website will provide information on the highway stretching from Maine to Key West, Fla., and help travelers plan trips. It was launched by the Richmond Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau and the state's Department of Historic Resources.
