A Virginia Beach woman has been sentenced to six years in prison for participating in the stabbing of a soldier at Fort Eustis and helping the suspect flee.
Patsy Ann Montowski had pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. At her sentencing Monday, a federal prosecutor asked Montowski why she didn't run for help the day her boyfriend, Christopher Lanum, attacked fellow soldier Mitchell Stone.
A sobbing Montowski replied: "Because I loved him."
That reason failed to sway the judge, who gave Montowski double the sentence she requested in a plea for leniency.
After the attack, Lanum and Montowski fled in the woman's van to the Shenandoah National Park. Lanum was killed when he pointed a shotgun at police.
