Va. Man Sentenced for Cross Burning

May 19, 2010

A Bedford County man who admitted burning a cross in an interracial couple's yard will spend nine months in jail.

Darrell Bruce Orange was sentenced Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to burning a cross with the intent to intimidate.

Bedford County Circuit Court Judge James Updike gave the 50-year-old Orange five years, and then suspended all but nine months.

Authorities said Orange and the couple lived in a mobile home park in the Bedford area. The woman found the charred remains of a cross in her back yard on Nov. 27.

Orange's lawyer, Darren Shoen, and the prosecution said Orange had a long history of mental health problems.
