A former store security guard faces a misdemeanor weapons charge stemming from a shooting incident outside a Roanoke mall.
According to court records, 33-year-old Dier Anwar Anwar was indicted earlier this month on a charge of recklessly handling a firearm.
Anwar is accused of firing a gun during a pursuit of a fleeing shoplifting suspect outside the Valley View Mall. He was employed by J.C. Penney at the time.
Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell says a police investigation didn't find any evidence that Anwar aimed the gun at the suspect.
A J.C. Penney spokesman said Anwar no longer works for the retailer and wasn't authorized to carry a gun at work.
