A section of Alderman Road near the University of Virginia's Scott Stadium will close this summer to accommodate utility work.
Both lanes of Alderman Road will be closed from Whitehead Road to George Welsh Way from May 24 through Aug. 21, while workers install a utility tunnel to support the residence halls on Alderman Road.
During the utility work, signs will redirect traffic on a detour via Whitehead and Stadium roads. In July, short-term utility work at the intersection of Alderman and Whitehead roads may also affect traffic flow.
The contractor plans to complete enough of the new tunnel by June 22 to allow one-lane access from the northbound lane of Alderman Road into the S-6 parking lot near the Student Activity Building to accommodate summer campers, incoming first-year students arriving for summer orientation and their families. The contractor will also maintain pedestrian access to Courtenay, Dunglison and Fitzhugh residence halls.
Emergency services access will be maintained to the dorms along Alderman Road and local police and fire departments will be kept apprised of construction schedules.
