Va. Little League Evicted from Naval Station

May 27, 2010

The Navy is evicting a Little League whose six ballfields are in the flight path to Chambers Field.

Capt. K.M. Johnson, commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk, says the potential for a crash at Fleet Park is too risky for the teams that play there. The park on Navy property is located a half mile from the airstrip.

The Fleet Park Little League, which has more than 550 players, has been told the 2011 season will be its last at the ballfields.

The city spent $450,000 to help renovate Fleet Park in 1994 and Little League President Charlie Triplett says the league spent $38,000 last year on improvements. He says the league wouldn't have invested the money if it had known it might be evicted.
