Overnight Closings Continue on Bay Bridge

June 7, 2010

Overnight closings of the westbound span of the Bay Bridge are extending several more weeks for a deck-replacement project.

The Maryland Transportation Authority expected to finish major work on the $65 million project by Memorial Day. Now the agency says it needs more time. The overnight shutdowns limit traffic to the two-lane eastbound bridge span, with just one lane in each direction.

For next week, officials plan to close the westbound span overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, it will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Spokeswoman Kelly Melhem says overnight closures also may be needed some Saturdays. The agency is working to finish the project before the peak travel months of July and August.
