Va. Mayor to Face Recall after Refusing to Resign

June 7, 2010

Portsmouth Mayor James Holley is facing a recall election next month after allowing a deadline to pass without resigning.

A judge had given the 83-year-old politician until 5 p.m. Friday to step down or face an election after residents submitted a petition calling for Holley's ouster.

Residents started the recall effort last year after City Council reprimanded and fined Holley for allegedly mistreating an assistant and asking her to perform personal chores.

It is the second recall election of his career. Holley was recalled in 1987, then re-elected in 1996.
