Drunk Man Drives Over Friend in Va. Campground Accident

June 7, 2010

A Page County man is recovering in the hospital after deputies say he was run over by a truck driven by his friend.

It happened overnight at The Point campgrounds in Rileyville. Sheriff's deputies say the man fell asleep on the ground behind the truck when his friend Ramos Rodriguez unknowingly backed the vehicle up, running over him.

Officers say Rodriguez had been drinking and was charged with driving under the influence.

"We don't have any indication of anything as far as any intent to injure that person. It was simply not being aware of it, and driving under the influence in Virginia is an offense, whether it's on a public highway or on private property," says Major Jason Pettit of the Page County Sheriff's Department.

The victim was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center. He is currently in stable condition.
