Md. Man Faces Sentence for Tossing Dog Off Bridge

June 7, 2010

A Brunswick man who threw a stranger's teacup Chihuahua off a bridge, apparently to its death, faces sentencing in Frederick.

Prosecutors are seeking jail time for 35-year-old David Beers at his sentencing Monday.

Beers pleaded guilty in March to felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor theft. The combined maximum penalty is 4½ years in prison and a $5,500 fine.

The Marine Corps veteran told police he snatched the dog from the driveway of Caisha and Timothy Wantz in a fit of anger last June after they ordered him off their property.

Beers said he had stopped to make a cell phone call, mistaking the quarter-mile, dirt lane for a utility road. He threw the dog into Catoctin Creek on his way home.
