A man convicted of killing a taxi driver in 2008 when he couldn't pay his $130 fare in Tysons Corner has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A Fairfax County jury sentenced 23-year-old Evan Gargiulo on Friday for the death of 49-year-old Mazhar Nazir. Evidence at trial showed Gargiulo shot the taxi driver in the back of the head.
Gargiulo, a Hillsborough, N.J., man who had recently moved to Reston, had claimed he was temporarily insane during the shooting. But he was convicted of second-degree murder.
On Friday, he stood and apologized to Nazir's family, particularly to the driver's 13-year-old son, Zain, who testified at the trial.
With good behavior, Gargiulo would be eligible for release in 2021.
