Southeast Va. Reactor Shuts Down Temporarily

June 10, 2010

Dominion Virginia Power says crews are working to restart a nuclear reactor at its Surry County power plant.

The Unit 1 reactor shut down automatically after an electrical power supply failed Tuesday morning, resulting in a reduced supply of water to the steam generators.

Dominion spokesman Richard Zuercher says crews are aiming to get the reactor working again soon, but didn't give a specific timetable. The shutdown didn't present a danger to workers or the public, and it didn't disrupt utility service.
