Va. Gets $38M in Federal Public Housing Funds

June 18, 2010

Public housing authorities in Virginia are getting more than $38 million in federal funding.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says the funds will help the agencies make major improvements to their public housing units. The funding is part of $2.3 billion the department awarded on Thursday.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan says the funds will help address needed improvements to public housing and also stimulate the economy and create jobs in the communities.

The funding is allocated through HUD's Capital Fund Program that provides annual funding to public housing authorities to develop, finance or modernize the public housing. It can be used to make improvements such as new roofs or energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems.
