Feds Targeting Defense Contracting Fraud in Va.

June 18, 2010

Federal prosecutors are targeting defense contracting fraud in Hampton Roads.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia has named a prosecutor to reinvigorate fraud investigations.

U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride announced Thursday that Stephen Haynie will coordinate the new initiative. Haynie is a supervisory assistant U.S. attorney in the Norfolk office.

Officials say eastern Virginia is home to many of the government's national security assets and contracting agencies. They also say the number of government contractors has grown in recent years as has the number of fraud cases.

Haynie has been a federal prosecutor in Norfolk since 1999 and before that was a federal prosecutor in Arlington and West Virginia.
