Va. Officials Begin Campaign to Educate Businesses on Child Labor

June 21, 2010

Virginia officials are initiating a statewide campaign to make businesses and parents aware of youth employment during the busy summer season.

The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry says it is contacting as many as 400 employers from June 21 to 25. The Child Labor Law Enforcement Team is hitting the streets to spread the word about safe employment practices for teen workers in Virginia.

Employers must follow specific laws including how many hours teens can work and what jobs they can perform. They must also follow federal labor laws.

Businesses face civil fines and penalties for violating the child-labor laws.
