Sewage Sludge on Fields Approved in 2 Va. Counties

June 22, 2010

State regulators have approved permits allowing treated sewage sludge to be spread on fields in Amherst and Campbell counties.

The permits approved Monday by the state Water Control Board were sought by Nutri-blend Inc. and Synagro Inc.

Nutri-blend wants to spread treated sludge on 3,400 acres in 160 hayfields in Campbell County. Synagro requested a permit to spread sludge on two fields totaling 142 acres in Amherst County.

Both permits drew opposition from residents concerned about possible health effects.

Staff with the state Department of Environmental Quality had recommended the permits' approval. Under state law, water board chairman Shelton Miles says the panel had few options other than approval.
