Runaway Vehicle Destroys Landmark Gazebo in Salem

June 25, 2010

Salem has lost one of its landmarks.

A runaway pickup truck crashed into a 19th-century gazebo at Lake Spring Park on Thursday.

Police Lt. Joe Mills says no one was injured but the gazebo was destroyed. The pickup wasn't occupied when it rolled down an incline hit the gazebo.

No charges have been filed.

According to the Salem Museum's website, the gazebo was built in 1841 and originally stood in the front yard of the first Roanoke County Courthouse. It was moved to the park in 1909 and designated a city landmark in 1979.
